The dangers of travelling without the proper cover
Most standard travel policies will have a pre-existing medical conditions exclusion. If you travel with a medical condition and then had to make a claim then any medical costs relating directly or indirectly to that medical condition would be excluded. This means that treatment for your condition is excluded and also the increase costs if treatment is affected by your condition are excluded. You are then personally responsible for these additional costs.
In addition, the pre-existing medical condition exclusion usually applies to the policy as a whole, regardless of whether the person living with the condition is named on it or not. This means that any claim related directly or indirectly to a pre-existing medical condition, even for someone not on the policy, may be refused. For example in the event of cancellation or curtailment of the holiday due to the pre-existing medical condition of somebody travelling, no member of the travelling party may be covered to claim for the holiday, or the portion of it that was lost.
This is why The Multiple Sclerosis Society Insurance Services suggests that all members of the travelling party are insured on a travel policy covering pre-existing medical conditions.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to reduce the cost of any medical treatment, then the £50 excess for each and every claim for Medical and Emergency Expenses will not apply.
Please note that the EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance. The EHIC allows you to access state-provided healthcare in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland. There are conditions and restrictions as to what is covered and the EHIC does not provide any cover for repatriation.
Full details of the cover provided by the EHIC can be found on the EHIC website ( (External)
www.ehic.org.uk
). This also provides a link giving you details of the conditions and restrictions in each country.
