MS Society joins fight for better social care

Published date: 03 Jan 2012 at 1:08PM

The MS Society has today challenged the Government to deliver a social care system which provides well-funded and high-quality care and support for people with long term conditions.

The Society joined more than 60 charities, faith groups and senior NHS figures in signing an (External) open letter to the Prime Minister, saying that the current social care system is failing people and that more needs to be done to give disabled people the support they need to live independent lives.

The letter also features on the front page of today's Daily Telegraph.

MS Society Chief Executive Simon Gillespie told BBC Breakfast: 'The current system is broken, and it's likely to get worse without significant and far-reaching reform. This is something that needs to be addressed urgently - not least because the economic costs of not investing will be very large.'

The letter comes after an independent enquiry, known as the Dilnot Commission, published its (External) recommendations on the Funding of Care & Support last summer; the Government since committed to publishing a White Paper on (External) social care by April.
